LIE FHUNG


Lie Fhung was born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia. She studied fine arts at the Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia, majoring in Ceramics. She worked as a designer in Shanghai and eventually settled in Hong Kong, where she began to work independently in digital media design. She has recently moved back to Indonesia after been living in Hong Kong for more than twenty years.

In her artworks, Fhung investigates private matters: hidden layers within dreams, memories, human emotions and their drives. Art making is her way to contemplate and to bear witness to personal stories. She thrives in exploring and working with diverse materials from porcelain to paint, metal, and digital prints, which are often presented in the form of installations. For her, the act of creating is a matter of existence and survival.

Fhung has received numerous national and international awards for her artworks since childhood. She participated in national and international art exhibitions, recognised for the delicate tactile sensibility that infuses much of her work. In 2008, she received Freeman Fellowship Award which entitled her to a 2-month fully supported Artist Residency at Vermont Studio Center in the US. Her work ‘flight’ (2005)  is featured in the book "Contemporary Ceramics" by Emmanuel Cooper (Thames & Hudson, 2009). She was awarded Silver Prize by UOB Art Academy HK in 2015.
