With five imaginary countries, “2084” is the world in fifty-nine years created by Michelle, which she has been developing for the past decade. This exhibition marks an important milestone of Michelle’s ten years of research and hard work; and a focus on her continuing chapter on two fantastical realms: Contradictoria (Polluta) and Northlandia. With thorough research, creativity, and the ability to articulate, each of these countries offers some in- depth and multi-dimensional narrative. Blending irony, imaginary fiction, and complex visual metaphors; “2084” is considered to be both a reflective tale and a whimsical re-imagining of the future, challenging our perceptions of reality, environmental crisis, and human agency. Contradictoria (Polluta) embodies a vision of hope—a utopia where environmental challenges are met with innovative solutions. The core of this narrative is the “Plan Polluta”, a ground- breaking initiative that transforms air pollution into building bricks through a process of condensation. These bricks serve as the foundation for floating green colonies, enabling artists to live and work in a vibrant, sustainable environment. In this idyllic setting, artists can thrive, holding exhibitions without the burden of financial constraints. In contrast, Northlandia paints a surreal picture of a land populated solely by giant puffins, dominated by a gigantic ice cream maker, ruled by the mysterious Ice Queen—the polar bear ice sculpture. This fantastical yet moving tale explores the delicate balance between human greed and the fragile landscape of the Arctic. It serves as a metaphor for the broader challenges of climate change and the urgent need for preservation amidst a world of flux.
Michelle Fung, born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, brings a unique perspective to her work, which has garnered recognition both locally and internationally. Her accolades include “Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2024”, and “Vogue Hong Kong Women’s Art Prize”.
