EMBODYING ECOLOGICAL FUTURES
Living in the shadow of the current, global environmental catastrophe demands our renewed creative engagement. How might embodied, somatic practices—experiencing society and the body politic, nature, and more-than-human ecologies directly through our physicality—offer new perspectives on themes that resist clear articulation? And how can creative practices of engaging with land, building livelihoods, and cultivating stewardship help restore our sense of kinship with the vast ecosystems we, as a collective, are so rapidly depleting and destroying? Liane Mah is an artist and founder of the Ning’s Yard, an eco-retreat center in Lantau. Together with fellow artist Dan Farberoff, the interdisciplinary duo—whose work spans visual arts, movement/dance, education, permaculture, and activism—will share their practices and collaborative explorations at the intersection of embodied practice, environmental philosophy, and ecological thinking. They invite conversation on how embodied responses can help re-imagine our world in the unsteady terrain of climate futures. Saturday, 6th June - 3:40 The talk will be conducted in English Please RSVP

HONG KONG MARINE BIODIVERSITY
Living in the shadow of the current, global environmental catastrophe demands our renewed creative engagement. Have you ever wondered about Hong Kong's marine biodiversity? What is lurking in our water? What else are there beside the Chinese White Dolphins? Where do you find the best corals and reef fishes In Hong Kong? Join our talk to learn more about Hong Kong's amazing underwater life. This talk is suitable for all ages and we will ensure that everybody will learn something new in this talk. with the vast ecosystems we, as a collective, are so rapidly depleting and destroying? Having worked for a wide range of education, NGO and think-tank institutions, Benita has abundant experience in working with people of diverse background and culture and has a wealth of expertise in community outreach. In 2018, she founded Encompass HK, a social enterprise to promote Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in different organizations. Benita graduated with a B.A. in Biology in Cornell University and Masters in Marine Biology at Boston University. She has done fieldwork in different oceans - from Australia, Indonesia to Mexico. She is committed to environmental causes and previously led the Earthwatch Institute Hong Kong as the Regional Director. At Encompass HK, she promotes sustainability via experiential-learning workshops and events such as the Green Women Festival and ecotours in Hoi Ha Marine Park among others. Saturday, 20 June 3:00 : The Amazing Biodiversity of Hong Kong — how to preserve and further enhance it for the next generations, with Mr.Wander Meijer, Executive Director, Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 4:00 : From Convenience to Catastrophe — Plastic's Toll on Ocean Life, with Dr. Christelle Not, Senior Lecturer at the University of Hong Kong
THE AMAZING BIODIVERSITY OF HONG KONG – HOW TO PRESERVE AND FURTHER ENHANCE IT FOR THE NEXT GENERATIONS.
Hong Kong is a highly urbanized area but is also one of the most biodiverse cities in the World! Almost 70% of the territory is green, and 40% of its land is protected as country parks, supporting a rich biodiversity including over 3,300 plants, 300 tree species and 52 species of snakes. Hong Kong holds roughly 1/3 of China's bird species (580+) and 1/3 of its amphibians, despite its tiny landmass (less than 0.1%) compared to China. In his talk, Wander Meijer will explain why Hong Kong has such an amazing biodiversity and showcase what Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden does to preserve and enhance this biodiversity. He will also give practical example of what the government, corporations and especially citizens, what you can do to safeguard our biodiversity. Saturday, 20th June - 3:00 The talk will be conducted in English Please RSVP

FROM CONVENIENCE TO CATASTROPHE: PLASTIC'S TOLL ON OCEAN LIF
Our oceans, the cradle of life and vital planetary regulators, face unprecedented threats. Among the most pervasive and rapidly growing dangers is plastic pollution – a seemingly modern convenience turned ecological catastrophe. While recent in geological terms, plastic debris now permeates every marine habitat, from sunlit surface waters to the deepest trenches, becoming an insidious driver of species extinction. This presentation delves into the devastating impact of plastic on ocean life. We'll explore why plastics pose a unique and multifaceted threat: entangling majestic creatures like sea turtles and whales; being mistaken for food by seabirds, fish, and plankton, leading to starvation and internal damage; breaking down into microplastics that infiltrate the entire food web; and leaching harmful chemicals that disrupt biological processes. We'll examine what science currently reveals about the scale of ecosystem disruption. Crucially, we will also confront the significant knowledge gaps. How do microplastics and associated toxins bioaccumulate and biomagnify through different species? What are the long-term, population-level impacts on vulnerable marine life? Understanding these unknowns is essential to grasp the full extent of plastic's role in the silent wave of extinction washing over our oceans. Saturday, 20th June - 4:00 The talk will be conducted in English Please RSVP
